Must Have For The Party Season - The LBD

Since Coco Chanel first popularised the Little Black Dress ("LBD") in the 1920's it's remained a fashion classic and nothing has changed this season. The LBD is a top fashion trend for Autumn/Winter 08 and is coming in various guises: suited tailoring at Balenciaga, a skin-baring one-shoulder cut at Lanvin, and inserts of lace or ruffles at Givenchy and Prada. We have been led to believe that whatever a woman's age, from teenager to grandmother, and whatever her taste and style, she can wear the LBD. I'm sure that most of us have at least one LBD in our wardrobe and will be wearing it over the coming weeks. But any of you who have been colour coded into your right season will know that pure black is a colour that really only suits Winters. Winters are able to enhance their black further with jewellery in silver and white gold, diamonds and diamonte, and coloured stones in hues of emerald, sapphire and ruby, with accessories to reflect these shades. For the rest of us who are Springs, Summers and Autumns we cannot wear solid black, at least close to our face. If possible, opt for a softer shade of black in charcoal and for those of you who are golden skinned consider chocolate brown as an alternative to black.
But if your LBD is a favourite, what is the answer? Firstly, show some skin. Do not wear solid black close to your neck and face; a scoop neckline, bare shoulders and/or arms will provide distance and soften the effect. If you do not wish to expose your arms, then go for sheer or lacy sleeves, or a short sleeve to reveal as much of your arm as comfortable to you. And it is not de rigeur to cover your legs in black stockings or tights; opt for lace, delicate fishnets or patterns that still show some skin, and to make your legs look longer wear nude coloured stockings with a similar shade of shoe.
Accessorise cleverly. If you are a pale skinned Summer, wear delicate silver or platinum jewellery, introduce some delicate gems in pink or aquamarine shades, and pearls are a much better option than diamonds. Consider diaphanous wraps, pretty hair combs and bows. A Spring can be bold and zany in her accessories; light yellow-gold metal worn above or set around bright gemstones, or chunky beads will work well. Wraps in yellow, red and especially coral would be lovely with your LBD. And for Autumns, warm it up! Opt for bronze and rich gold metals with gemstones in warm colours of amethyst, topaz and emerald, and if you are feeling daring throw a gold lame wrap around your shoulders. You may also consider animal prints in brown and camel.
Of course a final accessory that is not only essential but also possibly a major statement piece in its own right: your bag. With an LBD it should be small, not big – leave those large shoulder totes at home. Minaudieres, more commonly known as clutches, are hot news this season and range from discreet little numbers to bold, glamorous morsels to drool over. A true minaudiere is a jewel encrusted small box for personal belongings but currently there are a multitude of finishes to choose from; decorative crystals, python skin, ostrich skin, wood, studs, enamel, turquoise gemstones, and just plain leather, they are exciting and unlimited. All the stores are stocking them so check out TANGS, Metro, Robinsons, Takashimaya and also Quintessential in Pacific Plaza on Scotts Road.
Have fun wearing your LBD this festive season and I hope some of the tips above will give it the right accent and make you feel special and desirable.

Everything’s coming up roses! - The latest lip colour

Red lips are still in but the latest craze is a vivid rose pout.
Celebrities are going mad for bright pink lips but it is a difficult look to wear successfully.
The darker your skin tone, the more pigment you can wear. If you have a light, fair skin try either a deep colour in a sheer formula or a light shade in an opaque lipstick.
A tip for light complexions: if you want a bold mouth, echo the shade of lipstick on your cheeks and keep your eye make-up simple and nude.
