FABULOUS AFTER 40 - KEEPING IT YOUNG & CURRENT

Last week, my partner very proudly announced, that 50 is the new 40, 40 is the new 30 and 30 is the new...well we didn't get that far as it didn't apply to us. With this in mind, I got chatting to some of our clients and I realised its hard for some to stay current in the ever changing world of fashion. And I also realised that this has a huge impact on people's confidence and self esteem as they age. How to stay looking current without becoming a fashion victim?

Over and over I hear the same comments:

1) There is nothing in the shops that caters to the over 40's

2) All the clothes today are made for stick figures and for the under 20's

3) I don't need to bother with fashion anymore

4) My body shape is not the same therefore I don't know what to wear!

With this in mind, we made it our mission this month to prove that there are fashionable and stylish choices after 40. Although not the easiest task, I believe we have succeeded in proving there are things out there for everyone and it will make a huge difference to how you feel about yourself.

You can be fashionable at any age without feeling silly!

A) Colour Combinationstions -

Nothing screams "old and frumpy" more than wearing no colour (Black, Beige, Grey). The use of colour will pep up your outfit and give you a vibrant look. By simply wearing the right colour shirt in your season, paired with a direct complementry colour in an accessory; your look instanty becomes striking and stylish. Adding colour is one of the easiest steps to take. Finding out your season should be on your list of must do's this year. If you have already had your colour analysis done; make use of your colour selector wheel which will help you choose the right colour combinations. What is more uplifting than, a fun, bright colour when you are feeling gloomy?

B) Its All In the Jeans -

I'm too old for jeans - This is the number one mis-conception we continually hear. If you beleive that you can't wear jeans over a certain age, come in and see us and we will change your mind. Jeans are a must in every wardrobe. They keep you looking young and stylish. Opt for dark navy with no whispering, minimal pocket details and avoid tapered legs like the plague. Instead go for a boot cut that will balance the body and follow the golden rule: the waist band should go across the thickest part of the tummy. This will stop any muffin tops from forming and the tummy from bulging under the waist band.

C) Keeping It Classic

Sticking to classic styles can keep you looking younger and feeling comfortable with yourself. A classic style is a style that will stay in fashion year after year. We reccomend that the majority of your wardrobe be in classic pieces. Examples of classic styles are: A-Line skirts and dresses, straight leg pants, structured tops and dresses. Try to stay away from too much detail, like ruffles, embroidery, obvious stiching and pleats, as these will only draw attention to the bits you may be trying to hide. Go for clean lines and tailored clothing, such as shaped jackets, tops and dresses that glide over the tummy.

D) Body Beautiful

You may have discovered that certain styles you used to wear will not be the right choices anymore. Here are a few ideas that will transform the way you look while still keeping those troubled areas in line:

**Sheer sleaves: If you are not fond of your upper arms, instead of hiding them, wear a sheer 3/4 length sleeve or a material that shows a hint of skin underneth; this is still sexy and keeps the arms looking great.

**City Shorts: Instead of the baggy shorts you get around in day after day, opt for a city short or capri. This is a short which stops just below the knee, one of the thinest parts of the leg, and is often tailored. If you think you have white legs, tan them in the sun one afternoon. A good dose of sunshine will do no harm.

**Materials: Stay away from lycra or jersey as this can show every lump and bump. Wearing a soft linen or soft cotton can be very forgiving.

E) Shoes & Handbags

The final and one of the most important steps in keeping your look young and current. Too often we see a great outfit which is ruined with heavy black shoes and a chunky black bag to match. AAgghhh. One of the easiest and most affordable ways of remaining stylish and up to date is to choose a great pair of shoes and cool bag - Not matching but toning in colour and style with each other.

A great option is a wedge heel which is current, comfortable and an extra bit of height of course. For a more dressed up look, a d'orsy shoe is always a winner. With so many shoes to choose from here in Singapore, there is no excuse in this department.

Its time to throw away that big black day bag. It may be versatile and very practicle, but it is the fastest way to add years to your outfit. Try a cream or beige bag so it will still go with everything. Or get a little daring and buy a fabulous bag from your colour fan (if you have had your colours done that is). If you are still to do a colour analysis, a good neutral bag with a lot of life would be a snake print or animal print. What a great way to add some pizazz and character to your outfit?

We all know them; beauty myths that we have picked up and lived by for decades; Here are a few that need to be busted!

Beauty Myth 1

After a certain age, I can only wear Matt Makeup - BUSTED

This is a false and dangerous beauty myth. Wearing Matt Makeup will age you even more, accentuating every line and crevice. As you age you want to go for a light dewy appearance. Choose moisture rich, light reflecting foundations which keep skin looking plump and fresh. The same rules apply for the lips. If you wear Matt Lipstick, your lips look dull, thin and old. A lipshine will work wonders for you. Go that one step further and whip on a little gloss. It will take 10 years off you.

Beauty Myth 2

Wearing Eyeliner under my eye will make them more defined - BUSTED

Although this is partly true, wearing eyeliner on the bottom of the eye will actually close the eye making it look smaller. If you want to define your eyes, it is better to do it by lining the top lids, accentuate your eyebrows and apply blush on the cheeks. This will frame the eye nicely without closing it up. For a more dramatic look; apply the eyeliner only in the outer corner and 1/3 of the way along the lower lid and soften by smudging.

Makeup To Cover Up - BUSTED

It's a common belief that the more makeup you wear the more you will cover up.This can go horribly wrong. Sometimes the more makeup we wear the more it will emphasise our flaws. For example, caking on makeup to cover wrinkles will only make them stand out more. Makeup should be used to even skin tone not to hide your skin completely. So knowing when enough is enough is key.

Beauty Myth 4

Not Wearing A Moisturizer/Liquid Foundation Will Stop Me From Looking Oily - BUSTED

Wearing a moisturizer with a SPF should be your number one beauty priority. If you feel your skin is producing too much oil during the day, buy an oil free moisturizer. A good moisturizer will not create excess oil. Also it is a common myth that wearing foundation will make your skin oily. Quite to the contrary a good liquid foundation will smooth out your complexion and keep you looking great all day long. Opt for a mineral based foundation for this climate. Mineral Makeup is light and allows the skin to breathe without clogging. A quick brush of mineral powder will prevent skin looking oily and keep your foundation in place for longer.

One of my best girlfriends in Sydney is a freelance Makeup Artist for Print and she often send me pictures of the models before they are airbrushed and enhanced, just proving that yes, as beautiful as they are, they too need a little extra help to look their best. That is why, learning how to apply makeup correctly can make a big difference in the way you look. It will be the difference between looking good and looking fabulous.

We have found a great shop we think everybody needs to know about. A hidden gem that the girls at Nutri-Style frequent on a regular basis to pick up some bargains, and we do love a bargain.

Now before you go rushing down there, I must tell you, it does take some sorting through, but if you are not rushed for time, and don't mind sifting, then you are going to love this place. Once you have visited a couple of times, you will get more familiar with the shop, and you will know where to look and reduce sorting time.

Some of the brands you can find here are; Anne Taylor, Baby Phat, Banana Republic, Gap and many more.

The pieces you will find here are: T-Shirts, cami's, singlets, workout gear, and great skirts can be found as well.

This shop is fab for finding tops to layer with many different colours to choose from.

They have women, mens wear and childrens wear ( at the Holland Village Outlet) and the great part is they do have bigger sizes. Believe it or not , finding smaller sizes is quite a task; so its the sizes we are used to back home.

They get in new stock every Friday and once sold out they do not restock same item, so the risk of 50 other people wearing the same item is very slim.

Prices start from $5 and do not usually go above $30. You are sure to walk out with a smile. We do!!

This month I stayed in Singapore, so I decided to re-explore the underwear issue. Is there a size out there for everyone and what are the best places to visit? You may be surprised what we found.

**A little tip: Everyone should own a Push Up bra no matter what your age or size of bust. A good bra creates a great foundation and makes clothes sit smoothly. For a smaller bust it will give you curves, for a larger bust it will give you the lift you need.
