Colour Update- Bright Pops For Spring 09

When we think of Spring our minds surely turn to sprouting bulbs and blossoming flowers all basking in glorious sunshine, and fashion colours for this season thoroughly reflect this. Bright, burgeoning shades of vibrant pops are tempered by deeper, translucent or neutral tones but the emphasis is on vibrancy.
In these times of economic uncertainty, designers are promoting hope with the use of lively, strong colours while grounded, sophisticated hues acknowledge the need for stability.
Blue and purple, which were so popular in Autumn 08, are still very much in vogue but in shades of Lavender and Palace Blue, a bright French navy tone which can be paired with almost any other colour from the Spring collection.
Yellow doesn’t go away and this season we see it as Lemon, a zingy, inspirational shade, and green is taking centre stage with three options to choose from – vibrant green, Lucite green and dark citron which is a grassy, citrus green.
Salmon is this season’s favourite orange and it is put to great use in some striking cotton and silk prints, while fuchsia red is a major splash in not only clothing but in lips and nails too.
Neutrals are a staple as with every season but look out for subtle rosey beige and cool slate grey, both wonderfully dusty, vintage shades.
If you’ve been colour coded, these are the best for you (to be worn near the face):
- Springs – Lemon, Vibrant green, Palace Blue
- Summers - Lavender, Lucite green, Rosey beige
- Autumn – Dark Citron
- Winter – Fuchsia Red
I, for one, am happy to see the back of Winter and will be embracing all that Spring has to offer; I’m sure you’ll agree!

DIY BEAUTY TREATS
by Louise Field
There are some treatments that require an expert’s knowledge and steady hand but there are those that can be carried out at home, either in total privacy or during an evening with a couple of friends over a glass of wine – but try only one to ensure a perfect result! I’m not suggesting for one minute you should give up on spa visits altogether but the occasional at home treat may help towards surviving the current credit crunch. Try out the following recipes for some satisfying results:
DIY Berry Mask
A soothing strawberry facial mask that lifts away dirt and dead skin cells while delivering skin-softening botanicals. Almost good enough to eat too!
Ingredients – organic if possible:
1 cup fresh strawberries
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 tablespoon honey
1 medium egg
1 tablespoon plain yoghurt
¼ cup almonds
Combine all the ingredients in a food processor. Gently massage onto face and neck and leave for 3-5 minutes. Rinse with tepid water and follow with a splash of cool water and your favouritemoisturiser.
DIY Hands Down Sugar Rub
A moisturising sugar scrub for hands or feet, the sugar cleanses and stimulates circulation, the apricot oil moisturises and the lemon whitens and conditions nails.
Ingredients – organic if possible:
¼ cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons apricot oil
juice of ½ lemon
Combine sugar, oil and lemon juice and massage mixture onto clean hands, nails and wrists. Rinse with warm water, dry and follow with a hand lotion. Can be used on feet as well.
Update your wardrobe on a budget - TIPS FOR RECESSIONISTAS
by Louise Field

OK, the festive season is behind us and whether or not you tightened your purse strings in December; I think we are united in doing so now. I firmly believe a smile goes a long way and wish to keep our spirits uplifted during these leaner times, so here are a few tips to turn the die-hard Fashionista into a soignée Recessionista:
- Update your current wardrobe by replacing old buttons with new and consider adding or replacing trimmings. Perhaps shorten long sleeves to a ¾ length, and could an old, favourite skirt be brought up to date with a shorter hem?
- Find a good tailor to copy a coveted dress or pair of trousers in a different fabric and colour.
- New accessories can update an outfit and don’t need to be expensive. Check out the High Street stores and browse around areas such as Little India, Arab Street and Chinatown for some super bargain finds.
- Rent designer bags – check out the following websites which allow you to have a steady flow of It bags to enhance your look: www.thatbagiwant.com and www.sg.be-a-fashionista.com .
- Hold a swap party. Invite your friends to bring along any clothing that is obsolete to their wardrobe to swap with another’s. Items should be clean and pressed and in good, wearable condition. Shoes and bags might be an option too. A few bottles of wine will help to make it a social occasion as well and a lot cheaper than dinner out.
- When on a shopping trip, go with a list of essentials and don’t deviate.
- Keep your eye on good deals on make-up and skin care. Some websites offer top of the range products at discounted prices which provide great value – look at www.bbcosme.com for some interesting finds.
- Be colour coded at Nutri-Style – this is a great, life-long investment which will save many shopping disasters and give you enormous confidence.
Be it feast or famine, two rules that are invaluable at any time are:
- The 70/30 Rule – 70% or your wardrobe should be classic, timeless pieces while 30% should be fun, trendy items.
- The Cost per Wear Rule – sometimes it is more economical to spend a bit more on an item. Divide the cost of the purchase by the estimated number of times you may wear it, e.g. that beautiful Tod’s leather bag you’re drooling over may be something you could use most days for a year or more. Definitely worth the investment!

Tag Tamers; It's a universal truth to which all wearers of clothes can attest: Those sewn-in tags can be itchy, irksome and irritating because...they re scratchy...they re always popping out...of your dress, blouse, sweater, even low-rider pants and announcing to the world both your maker and size! - They're hard to cut-out...often making a nice little hole in your favorite blouse or dress! And at today's prices, no one needs that. - They're important for washing...or was it dry clean only? - They're a necessary evil.
To see more of their innovative products check out their website at www.glamourpuss.com.sg or visit their store Chai at
