ITS ALL IN THE JEANS!

Last month we mentioned how essential jeans are in everyone's wardrobe. No matter what your age or body shape, owning the right pair of jeans can help you look stylish day into night.

Finding the right pair of jeans for your body shape can be quite tricky if you don't know what you are looking for, so we have compiled some essential jean buying information for you:

A couple of hints to remember:

**You are never too old, too big, too curvy or too small to wear jeans.

**Buy 2 pairs of jeans; a longer leg to wear with heels for a dressier look and a shorter leg to wear with flats for a casual look.

**If you like wearing a belt, bring your favorite one along when shopping for your jeans.

**Go shopping when you feel good about yourself and you are not rushed for time. List down the requirements you are looking for before hand to eliminate confusion and take a friend you trust for an honest opinion.

**Consult an Image Consultant if you do not feel confidant enough to pick the right pair. An Image Consultant can help you by generating your Style Guide or going with you on a Personal Shopping trip; you will learn what the right styles for you are.

Jeans For The Different Body Shapes

1) Pear Shape

A Boot Cut Jean is the most flattering style for a Pear Shaped body. The slightly flared bottom will balance the hips and minimize the thighs, hips and bottom. This cut is fitted at the top and widens gradually from knee down.

Choose a mid rise jean that hits across the belly button. The denim should be dark with no whiskering, be sure to choose a jean with no details on the pocket. Detailing on the pockets will draw attention to an area you want to keep as streamlined as possible.

Avoid tight Capri jeans, tight waist band, tight legs and pockets that are small or widely spaced apart as they will make the derriere look bigger!

2) Straight Body Shape

For a straight body shape, you want to create curves. You can do this by investing in a straight legged jean.  This will make the hips look wider and add curves to your bottom. Look for a low rise jean in a cotton-lycra blend. The clingy fabric hugs the body and a contoured waist band creates curves. Also look for jeans with detailed pockets that are slightly small and higher on the butt.

You may also want to find jeans with whiskering on the outer thigh areas. Wearing heels will also help with adding curves.

Avoid stiff denim and loose or relaxed jeans. Also avoid jeans that are too tight, this will only make the legs look skinny.

3) Curvy Body Shape

If you want to emphasize your curves, choose a straight leg with a comfortable stretch in it. If you do not want to emphasize your curves, choose a boot cut jean to balance the body.

Again, to emphasize your curves go for a lighter colour denim, and for a slimming look go for a dark denim.

The problem with a curvy body type is the waist band can tend to gape at the back. So find a jean that fits your hips and bottom, then get the waist adjusted at the tailors. Pay no attention to the size on the label, it is better to go with something slightly bigger than having to squeeze into a tight fitting jean. (you can always rip off the label with the size after :-)

A classic jean will work well with a curvy body shape.

To best help a thick middle area be sure the waist band goes around the thickest part of the tummy.

Avoid skinny jeans and loose fitting jeans.

Problem Areas Taken Care of!

1) Leg Length

SHORT LEGS: To achieve the look of longer legs, try a Trouser Jean, a Trouser Jean has a slightly higher waist that provides a longer vertical line. Also make sure your jean is long in length, this dos not mean it has to drag on the floor. Wearing a pair of heels and the jean hitting below the ankle is ideal.

LONG LEGS: Today many jeans come in different pant lengths. Be sure to find the right length for a perfect fit. Be sure not to buy a pair of jeans that are to short. A good length would be the jean finishing just below the ankle.

2) WAIST WORRIES

If you have a problem middle section, a pair of jeans with the waist band going around the thickest part of the tummy will minimize this problem. Avoid a low rise or hipster jean as you will only encourage your tummy to fall out over the band creating a muffin top!

3) HIPS & THIGHS

HIPS: If you feel you are too hippy to wear jeans, eliminate this problem by looking for jeans without big front pockets or slit pockets. Instead opt for a front pocket that is a classic style, you may want to consider having the front pockets sewn up.Definately stay away from patch pockets as the area will be emphasized. Choose a dark denim with the stitching in the same colour. Avoid light stitching and designs.

THIGHS: A dark denim in a boot cut is idea if you have an issue with your thighs. The slight flare will draw the eye down and create balance. Avoid jeans that are to tight or to loose.

CAPRI"S! Can I Wear For My Body Type?

For something a little lighter and fun, a capri jean is also a fabulous way to perk up your wardrobe. Be sure to find the right one for you.

PEAR SHAPE: Be sure to find a capri jean with a wider leg. Avoid Skinny or tapered leg. (Keep in mind your rules mentioned above)

STAIGHT BODY SHAPE: To add curves you should be looking for a capri jean that has a straight leg, even a slight tapered leg will work well.

CURVY BODY SHAPE: Wearing a capri jean that has a straight leg will emphasize the curves, where as wearing a wider leg will balance the curves.

**A capri jean will always look best when teamed with a heel or wedge in a height that is comfortable for you.

**When in a cooler climate, a capri jean with a pair of boots is very stylish.

**Be sure to have the length ending just below the knee for a flattering style, remember if they don't you can always have them tailored!!

I MY JEANS 4EVER!

Investing in a great pair of jeans as a staple for your wardrobe can be pricey, but well worth it. So caring for jeans is very important, a couple of tips to help you get many years of wear out of them:

**Always wash jeans in cold water. Warm water can cause shrinkage. And be sure to turn your jeans inside out to prevent fading.

**Air drying your jeans is the best option. Putting them in the dryer can shrink the fabric.

**Never use fabric softener on jeans, the dye will be broken down causing the colour to fade.

**For dress jeans, always dry-clean. This will keep the colour and shape for longer.

**If tailoring, be sure to wash and dry your jeans before alterations, this will ensure shrinkage is accounted for. Be sure to get the hem turned up in the same colour stitching as the rest of the pants and use a little sandpaper to create some natural whispering on the turned up hem. It may cost a little more but will guarantee a seamless finish.

**Find a tailor who specializes in denim. If you have any tears or loose threads, they can work wonders, ensuring your jeans will always look great. We use Dr John at Needle Boutique #03-78 Lucky Plaza 67325359

HIGHLIGHT YOUR BEST FEATURES

A matte face may be good for the daytime and a classic look will never fail, but for something a little extra special Highlighting Makeup will give you that healthy glow; like you have just skied down from the slopes of .... and into your fabulous event. There is a big selection of highlighting products out there, which makes it easy to illuminate your complexion, without going anywhere near a ski field.

Today's Highlighting Makeup is now less brash and glittery; the refined opalescent particles subtly play with the light that hits your face. The great thing is they are so subtle you feel natural and fresh, and not weighed down with heavy makeup.

This month we will tackle highlighting and next month we will tackle contouring.

How Do I Use Highlighting Products?

Brow Bone:

You often see women on TV who seem to have amazing eyes and brows. If you look closely, they will all have their brow bones highlighted, which lifts the whole face.

To achieve this, use a highlighting eyeshadow which has a shimmer agent present. The best colours would be cream, silver and gold.

Start by defining the eyebrows with a brow powder or pencil, and apply your eyeshadow. With an eyeshadow brush (not the felt tip applicator) sweep the shimmer powder on the brow bone under the eyebrow. Be sure to start mid brow and sweep outward to end brow. Don't go too mad as you can over do it. You may also use this shimmer powder on the inside corner of the eye lid making the eyes look bigger. Apply with a small eye contouring brush.

Cheek Bone:

Apply your blush to the apple of your cheek with circular sweeps of your blush brush, then with a lighter colour blush that has a shimmer agent present, brush on above the apple of your cheek (the upper edge of cheekbone) and up towards the temple, blending well.

Lips:

If you would like to highlight to your lips, after applying your lipstick, use your lip brush to apply a shimmer gloss in the middle of the lips, top and bottom.

Face:

When adding highlights to the face you must work with 3 colours 1) Base Foundation in your natural undertone. 2) A highlighting colour one level lighter that your base colour. 3) The third shade will be your contouring shade in a darker colour.

Apply your base foundation over the whole face.

Visualize an Oval around your face and apply the highlighting powder to the high points inside the oval, including your forehead, under the eyes, on top of the cheekbones and the tip of your chin.

You may also want to try a luminescence lotion. This is a lightweight lotion or sheer foundation that produce an almost invisible sheen that will give the skin a luminous glow. Either apply to the skin by itself or mixed with your foundation.

What a city. For the past week, I have been entertained by Bette Midler, serenaded by Tony Bennett, been in awe at Maya Angelou's poetry, dazzled by brilliant lighting, frightened by helicopter rides and of course spoilt by choice with all the shopping one girl can take.

If you want to be razzle dazzled, than this is the place to do it. With my credit cards maxed out, I can honestly say that shopping in Vegas excelled my expectations.

A couple of highlights would be:

The Miracle Mile Shopping Center - Las Vegas BLV (next to Planet Hollywood)

A stunning shopping Mall with the likes of H&M, Marciano, Victoria's Secret, Betsey Johnson, Urban Outfitters, Fredericks Of Hollywood, True Religion Brand Jeans, Two Lips Shoes and Sephora which is a Makeup Store with many different brands on offer.

After your tiring shopping adventure, stop off at Trader Vics for some yummy food while watching the fountains of The Bellagio across the street!

The Fashion Show Mall - Las Vegas BLV (across the road from The Wynn)

This center is HUGE, it gets its name from the fact that every Friday, Saturday and Sunday they run Fashion Shows every hour. Here you will find all your favorite brands such as Abercrombie, Banana Republic, Zara, Anne Taylor, Diesel, Guess, Nine West, Express, just to name a few. The FSM also houses, Macy's, Neimen Marcus, Saks and Nordstrom's where you will be sure to find all the branded goods and brands that you can't find here in Singapore such as Gwen Stafani's L.A.M.B, Baby Phat, Seven For All Man Kind, Oscar by Oscar De la Renta and many more. This is a great place to buy jeans. So many brands, so many sizes at such a great price.

Be sure to start your splurge at Crazy Crepes...shopping on an empty stomach can be so distracting.

Las Vegas Premium Outlet Center - Charleston BLVD (out of town, 10 mins by taxi)

This is the only Outlet center I would recommend here. The quality and style is better than the other outlets, and you will not be overwhelmed with choice. It is very easy to get to; either take a bus from the Flamingo Hotel or grab a taxi. Some stores you will find are Kenneth Cole, Banana Republic, Guess, Polo Ralf Lauren, Coach (be prepared to line outside for this one), D&G, FCUK, Armani Exchange, Elie Tahari, Liz Claiborne. The Venetian  - Las Vegas BLVD

If you like shopping in style, head to The Venetian; I think this is one of the nicest hotels in Vegas. The casinos are located in the basement so you can completely ignore the slot machines and card games if you want. Stroll through the cobbled streets alongside the winding canals and find Boutiques such as Jimmy Choo, Burberry,  BCBG Max Azaria, Bebe, Anne Taylor, Shooz, Victoria Secrets and many more.

Be sure to check out Peter Lik's art gallery. Peter Lik is an Australian master photographer. You will be truly stunned by his work. Peter has done so well in Vegas, he now resides there as he is much sought after.

Finish your shopping day in the Forum of restaurants such as Wolfgang Puck and be serenaded by the live Opera performances on the hour.

Target - Flamingo Road

I couldn't leave this one out. Vegas even had a Target. Here I picked up my essentials such as creams and hair products, headache tablets, poolside dresses and pajamas. Keep in mind, Target is great for picking up all your kids clothing, toys and costume jewelry. I couldn't resist!!

All of the shopping was simply glamorous, and the above was just the tip of the iceberg, all the main Hotels house many Boutiques with a wide range of known designers and not so known designers. I had a wonderful time exploring this surreal city (I enjoyed many dinners with a Bride sitting at the next table) and was actually pleasantly surprised by what Vegas had to offer.

My baggage allowance suffered of course, but there is nothing like a bit of rearranging at the last minute (sorry to the guys behind me)!

Dining at TAO

After all that shopping a girl can get famished. For a stunning place to eat and an absolute must if you are a foodie like me, TAO in The Venetian really blew my mind. With a mouth watering mix of Asian Cuisine, stunning design and service that is unbeatable, TAO is a reminder of what dining out should be known for. Reservations a must.
