INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

International Women’s Day (“IWD”) is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.   It is held annually on 8 March and in some countries such as China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, IWD is a national holiday.  Hundreds of IWD events occur all over the world and these range from small informal gatherings to large-scale highly organised affairs to honour women’s advancement and to highlight the need for continued vigilance and action.  Its history dates back to the early 1900’s when great unrest and critical debate was occurring amongst women.  Their oppression and inequality was spurring women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change.  In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York demanding shorter working hours, better pay and voting rights.  As a result, The Socialist Party of America declared the first National Women’s Day and it was observed across America on 28 February 1909.  In 1910, a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen.  Clara Zetkin, leader of the Women’s Office for the Social Democratic Party in Germany, tabled the idea of an International Women’s Day.  She proposed that on the same date of every year in every country there should be a celebration to press for their demands.  The Conference of over 100 women from 17 countries representing unions, socialist parties, working women’s clubs and the first 3 women elected to the Finnish Parliament all unanimously agreed to Zetkin’s suggestion and so the IWD was borne.

Some of you reading this may already be aware of IWD but some of you will not.  You may feel inclined to host your own breakfast or lunch with friends to honour its integrity either on 8 March or a date close by, or to attend an organised event.  If the latter, the American Women’s Association in Singapore is holding the AWA International Woman of the Year Award Ceremony on Thursday 5 March and if interested you should look at the Association’s website for further details: www.awasingapore.org .

In some countries where IWD is an official holiday, the men pay their respects to their female relatives and work colleagues with flowers and small gifts –I suggest instead that we ladies honour each other by showing solidarity, help and friendship to one another as this way we will grow stronger and achieve so much more.

Happy International Women’s Day to each of you!

MICRODERMABRASION – IS THIS THE ANSWER?

::Desktop:face.jpgBeing the squeamish type that I am, botox, lasers and scalpels just don’t appeal. But what’s a girl to do to counteract the onslaught of time and too much fun?  After some investigating, I decided to explore the option of a Microdermabrasion Treatment at medSpa in Camden Medical Centre.  Microdermabrasion is a scientific method to resurface the skin and treat conditions such as brown spots, shallow acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles and dull, ageing skin, which can be used on both men and women.  Micro-crystals are vacuumed through a delicate hand-piece that is held at a precise angle to the face in order to produce a skin-polishing peel.  This only takes a matter of minutes and it is usually followed by a Vitamin C facial and a massage which when combined removes dead, flaking skin and stimulates the production of fresh, young skin cells and collagen, and restores elasticity.   Improvement can be seen after just one treatment but regular sessions provide optimal, lasting results.

My painless, relaxing session took 1hr 15 minutes at the end of which my skin felt incredibly smooth and clean, and looked convincingly glowing.  I’m totally hooked and have sworn to have monthly sessions which although not cheap, cost much less than cosmetic surgery and regular painful injections.

Microdermabrasion is widely used in Singapore but my treatment at medSpa was professionally carried out so I feel confident to return and recommend to friends.  For further information, look at www.ivorjlim.com/medspa/index.html .

There are some blasts from the past this season!  Who remembers jumpsuits and harem pants from the 80s?  Well they’re back with a vengeance but in more elegant guises thankfully – nothing like “Charlie’s Angels” unless you’re 14 and buying in Top Shop!  The variety of jumpsuits is endless and if you feel tempted think elegant; there are draped, sleek offerings in a variety of fabrics and prints, but less is more with this look and elongate the effect with high, delicate heels.  Harem pants are part of the voluminous trend and work well on women who are slim on top.  Again, heels should be high and define the waist with belts and tucked in tops which work especially well if close-fitting.   When considering volume,  err on the side of caution. There are some very chic, prettybell-shaped skirts that can disguise heavy hips and thighs, instead providing emphasis on trim waists and slender legs.  Do not wear with volume on the top unless you are petite all over; instead, opt for slim-fitting or structured tops.

Blazers are also in vogue but this timethey are unstructured and slouchy, in easy fabrics and a myriad of colours and lengths.  The focus is on the shoulders and lapels, and the jackets should be thrown over dresses, pants and skirts, loose or belted and buttoned.

Additional hot styles for Spring are colour blocking and tribal.

Colour blocking works two ways: you can team colours from the same family for a harmonious look, or put opposite colours together for an edgy, jarring effect.  For instance, put bright pinks with vivid fuschias and turquoise with royal blue; this will achieve a unified, sophisticated look.  And keep warm tones like red and orange together.  Team all with nude toned shoes for elegance; or for high impact, put regal purples with fiery oranges, lime green with melon or rosey pink and finish with a bold, contrasting shoe or handbag.

The tribal look is easy to achieve with jungle, animal prints and chunky jewellery.  Python prints provide luxury while earthy golds, bronze, browns and rusts keep it sultry – and for the really daring, top it all with Masai style hair (See Tribal look above).  Finally, leather, lace and fringing are all hot – but it’s advisable not to wear all three together!

Great Finds in Singapore - Anchorpoint Outlet Mall

During these times of economic recession, we are always looking for bargains here at Nutri-Style. Recently I had to visit Ikea for some essentials for impending birth and I popped accross to Anchorpoint Outlet Mall as I hadn't checked it out for at least a year. I was delighted to find some great bargains. I picked up a fabulous pair of platform sandals at Charles and Keith for $14.99 (UP $60). G2000 also had some great classic dresses, skirts and pants, ideal for work, at rock bottom prices. While you won't get the latest fashion at the outlet stores, it is ideal for classics and neutrals.

Among the outlet stores that have opened are Billabong, Charles & Keith, Clubmarc Express, City Chain (watches), Capitol Optical, Factory Outlet Store (FOS), G2000, Giordano, Options 180 and Pedro. Jewellers like Goldheart and SK Jewellery have also opened outlet stores there.

Location: Anchorpoint is located directly accross from Ikea at 370 Alexandra Road, Singapore 159953, junction of Queensway and Alexandra Road.
