FINDING THE PERFECT PARTY DRESS

With Christmas just around the corner, the search for the perfect party dress is probably fairly high on your list of priorities. Nutri-Style has put together a few tried and tested guidelines that will see you looking fabulous for all of your end of year parties. Choose from dresses so classic you will be able to wear them more than once!

HINTS WHEN CHOOSING YOUR PARTY DRESS

*Keep the colours that suit you (your colour season)  in mind when choosing your dress. A splash of colour will always stand out in a crowd.

*Keep your body shape in mind. Choose styles that make the most of your best attributes.

*Keep your style personality in mind. If you are not comfortable with a sexy body concious dress, then the office party may not be the time to try this look! Believe me, when I say I have some expereince of this and I am in no hurry to repeat it.

*If you are top heavy, a bra is a must. Unless of course the dress is more structured than the Harbor Bridge!

* Always check the dress code. Call the host if you are unsure. Being under dressed or over dressed is a fashion no no and will leave you feeling uncomfortable and may even end up ruining your night.

*Employing pattern in your dress is a good strategy. The use of pattern can distract the eye and hide flaws such as bulging tummy or lumpy thighs.

*TRY TRY TRY…..the biggest mistake we see: women try the dress on in the shop, like it, buy it, take it home and do not put it on again till the night of the event. You must try the dress on at home. Walk around in it, look at it from all directions, sit down in it, try the shoes you will be wearing it with. It will save tears and running mascara when you put it on and it was not how it looked in the shop!  Now for some actual shapes of dress:

THE HALTER DRESS:

For something a little sexier, opt for a halter dress. This accentuates and broadens the shoulders; great if you are a pear shape as is will balance out the hips. To further distract the eye away from your hips, go for embellishment around the neckline and you will look stunning.

Beware though if you are bigger busted, as you may not be able to wear a bra with this style of dress and the saggy look is definately not in.

For Halter dresses here in Singapore try AVANA or Warehouse.

THE WRAP DRESS:

This is a classic dress and great if you are not sure of your body type as it is universally flattering. Styles with sleeves are ideal if you want more coverage in the arm area. A V-neck line will make a big bust look smaller and a smaller bust will have the bonus of showing some cleavage. Make sure it wraps and ties just under the bust line which is the thinnest part of the body.

For wrap dresses Diana Von Furstenburg in Takashimaya or Karen Millen.

THE LBD:

Again, great for those who have just started on their style journey and are not sure which colours suit them

best. This is a dress you will wear again and again. To change the look, just change your accessories. A

few rules to remember when choosing this little number.

  1. Keep your event in mind; you do not want to go too short unless you have nice long legs. The knees
  2. are not the most attractive part of the body, so it will be more desirable for the hem line to stop just
  3. below the knee, at the thinnest part of the leg. If you have a petie frame you may go shorter.
  4. An interesting neckline will jazz the outfit up. Sweatheart, plunging v-neck, scoop neck etc.
  5. Black shoes will be your best friend as if you want to elongate and slim your legs. if you have slim                     ankles and nice legs then add some pizazz to your LBD with some fabulous jewel toned shoes - Who said black has to be boring.
  6. If you know your season, but still want to stick to a safe black dress, wear your colours in a necklace, earrings, or shawl up close to your face. This will take away the harshness of black if it is not your ideal colour.

Lots of little black dresses can be found in Robinsons, Banana Republic and Avana.

THE EMPIRE WAISTED DRESS:

The most flattering dress of all. This is a great choice. The empire waist cinches just under the bust, at the thinnest part of the body, and skims over all the parts we hate most, tummies, thighs and bottoms. It is great for those with a bigger bust as it will give you support and balance the body. If you want to add more curves, go for something a little more clingy and you will achieve this. This is a great dress as you can play with colour as long as you know where it should be placed. For example, if you where a pear shape, the top half would be a gorgeous colour in your season (e.g. Autumns purple if you are Autumn) and below the band would be black - This will play up your top half and make your hips and bottom look less obvious.

Get some great empire waist dresses in Warehouse, Felt or Principles.

FLOOR LENGTH GOWN:

The most elegant of all, this is a dress ideal for more formal events. A metallic sheen or beading will definately add glamour but beware as shine will also be unmerciful to any body flaws such as a rounded tummies or curvy thighs.

A matt fabric is more body friendly for most people.

If you are petite, a tea length dress will add some height to your frame. This is when the hem starts shorter towards the front, gradually getting longer at the back.

Stunning floor length gowns are available at GLITTERATI or Blum.

Beauty -  Gorgeous Hair

With many people heading home for Christmas, we thought we would cover one of the most important topics of beauty...HAIR. Whether you will get your bangs looked after here in Singapore or indulge in pampering paradise back home, follow the rules and you will have hair to die for, ready for all the end of year parties.

Taking your face shape into consideration is really important when deciding on the best cut for you. The rules of beauty should never be set in stone, so feel free to break them if you love the style you have now. But if you are starting from scratch or just need a change.....

STYLES FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE

OVAL: (an inverted egg shape) The most versatile face, which will suit a number of different styles. Layers

near the cheekbone, lips or chin will highlight your features. For short cuts, frame the face with layers that

skim the cheekbone. If you have curly of thick hair, avoid blunt cuts.

SQUARE: (broad chin, forehead, cheeks and jaw line same width) Soften the jaw line with layers. Add volume to the hair in the area around the eyes and crown to offset the squareness of the jaw. Avoid chin length bobs and blunt cut bangs. Curve and angle hair across the forehead. Soft and natural should be the overall look.

ROUND: (Cheekbones are the widest part. Chin is round and full.) Styles that fall below the chin with long layers will remove bulk and weight from the sides of the face. Hair must fall close to the head. Wispy and tapered ends will achieve this look. Medium to long length is best. Avoid roundish styles. Add volume to the crown to lengthen the face.

HEART: (Chin is narrow, forehead is moderately broad.) Side swept or soft bangs will draw attention to your gorgeous cheekbones and eyes. For long hair, subtle layers will be the best. For short hair, keep the layers soft and long. Avoid styles that are full at the temple, and straight heavy fringes.

RECTANGLE: (face is longer than it is wide. Forehead, cheekbone and jaw are as wide as each other). Chin length cuts and bobs are great for women with a long face. It will create the illusion of width. Add volume to the top of the head and avoid short layers. Long layers will create a softer look. A full fringe would also suit this face shape, avoid center parts and long dead straight hair.

TRIANGULAR: (Jaw line is the widest part of the face.) A full fringe is a great option for you as it will add width to the forehead and balance the jaw line. Medium to long hair that is cut just under the jaw line with wispy or irregular lengths. Have the ears covered and create height and width at the temples. Avoid short hair and center parts.

DIAMOND: (Chin is pointed and cheekbones wide and often high.) Broaden the forehead and jaw line by creating symmetrical lines around the face. Your hair should have alot of volume around the jaw line. Avoid very short styles and too much height at the top of the head.

COLOUR

Getting your hair colour right is very important. The first thing to consider is your season, once you have been determined as a cool or warm keep these simple rules in mind.

COOL SEASON: Icy or ashy colours will suit best. Colours as beige or champagne would be a good suggestion Avoid tones like auburn or copper as your skin will look very pink.

WARM SEASON: Warmer shades such as golden and auburn will look best. Avoid bright blond shades or ashy tones as it will make your skin look very sallow.

No matter what your season, highlights and lowlights will give a very natural look and make for less maintenance.

What is a lowlight? Lowlights are where darker strands are woven into the hair to create depth.

HANDY HAIR HINTS

**For oily hair, baby powder on a comb pulled through the hair will blend the crown area nicely or spritz the roots with hairspray and rub with a towel. The alcohol will absorb the oil.

**Smooth down ragged ends with serum.

** Rinse hair with cold water before swimming to prevent coloured hair going green or brassy.

**For visible roots, wear hair with an uneven or zig zag part.

**To temporarily hide grays, style hair and touch up with mascara.

**Sleep on a satin pillowcase. This will not ruffle the cuticles and create less friction making hair less frizzy.

**No one likes dandruff, the best remedy is to choose 3 over the counter dandruff shampoos; one containing selenium sulfide, one containing salicylic acid and the other containing pyrithione zinc and rotate. Rotating dandruff shampoos will reduce the effect of drying out your hair and each ingrediant has a different benefit.

**Always take a picture of an idea you have with you to the hairdresser. Peoples perceptions are always different. A good hairdresser will tell you if a style will suit you or not.

**When straightening hair, finish with a blast of cold air to seal the hair shaft and give you a nice glossy look.

Great Finds in Singapore

SUN SEEKER SWIM WEAR.

Yes, we have found a swimwear range in Singapore that finally fits right and at the right price. As many of you know, Simone & myself are not exactly petite in the bust department so our search for the perfect swimmers has been long and ardorous. After many tedious attempts to buy poolside attire, Simone finally stumbled upon Sunseeker Swimwear, a brand that comes from Australia and is sold in Takashimaya.

We recommend this brand because the sizes are great, it suports bigger cup sizes even though it is not underwired and the designs are fantastic.

But the number one reason this brand is so great, you can buy them as seperates! A great idea here would be buy the bottoms in a plain dark colour, and the top in a colourful pattern. This will suit all body shapes and is very flattering.

Both Simone and myself have purchased a couple of sets of tankinis, (because the price was so great we thought we would splurge) ; now going to the pool is not as traumatic as it was before. We love our new swimmers and they are perfect if you are heading to a beach destination for your holidays or if you are staying in town and lazing by the pool.

Nutri-Style is always looking out for suggestions on where to buy swimwear that fits here in Singapore, so if you have found some in the past, let us know so we can let others know!
