To Sprain, or Not to Sprain? Hot News on Shoes
Autumn/Winter ‘08 is The Season for elaborate shoes and it is likely this will be carried through into Spring. Shoe styles are extravagance and extreme; nothing seems to be too outrageous, and heels and platforms are the main news. Coming in all shapes and heights, one can become very confused but remember the main priority is to be able to walk in them. That is, of course, if you plump for heels at all – the new heelless shoe or boot is making the headlines courtesy of Victoria Beckham who sported a thigh length pair of black heelless boots by Antonio Berardi earlier in October. Thankfully, she had the arm of husband David Beckham for support and, I suspect, a chiropractor waiting in the wings to crack her spine back into position! However, for those of us who are less adventurous let’s look at more sensible heels.
Thankfully, kitten heels and even ballet pumps are still in otherwise we are looking at several inches of fantastical shaped exaggeration: chunky, angular, wide, narrow and even cone-shaped – impact and sexiness are key. Detail is huge: mirror heels embedded with mother-of-pearl, lace and embroidery, nothing is barred. And in addition to this are platform soles, not the Abba-esque sort of years gone by, but more elegant, some being narrow, some thick, and some cut-away.
The shoe itself may be quite understated to balance a wow-factor heel but alternatively they are sporting buckles, bows and ruffling and are in many different fabrics such as patent, satin, velvet, lace and suede. Animal prints and snake skin are also huge at the moment.
If you are a fan of pointy-toed shoes and boots you will not be disappointed, however there are other styles on offer too with peep-toes, round-toes, open-toes and cut-aways, and some boots have fold-down collars and a western accent.
Shoe colours have also reached new heights this season with an emphasis on deep, rich colours such as dark red, forest green, royal blue, fuchsia, and golden yellow though neutrals are still around in blacks, browns and tans. There are some great evening shoes around and they come in a whole range of colours; black, red, purple and dark or natural metallics such as silver, bronze and pewter.
I would refer to the shoes desribed above as “taxi shoes”; they are worn mostly for sitting down and not walking. At the end of the day we want to look chic and fashionable but still be able to walk.
So whatever you are tempted to choose remember a few key shoe rules:
- Ankle straps thicken an ankle and shorten the leg
- Long, pointy-toes make long, large feet longer and bigger
- A shoe that wraps and ties around the calves is best left to taller, slim legged women and ballerinas
- Thigh length boots generally are best left to the Victoria Beckham’s of this world
- Some heel is better than none; flats do not equal comfort as they give no arch support to the foot
- Walking shoes can be fashionable, look to GEOX, DKNY, Aerosoles, Prada, Hogan and Tod’s for examples.
Happy shopping!

ARE YOU FAKING IT? The Do's & Don'ts of Fake Tan
How many of us enjoy being a bronzed goddess or god? I think almost everyone! Especially here in Singapore where there is so much skin on display from morning to night. A tan makes us feel more attractive, slimmer and healthier but the dangers of regularly lying in the sun are very real with skin cancer on the increase daily. At the very least, the sun’s rays also age the skin prematurely causing dehydration, wrinkles, and pigmentation which can be costly and timely to treat.
After some consideration, I think the best alternative is having a fake tan. The products we know of old have improved enormously and now often come without that familiar rancid smell, artificial preservatives and alcohol which is great news for those with sensitive skin or allergies. If we’re brave we may be happy to self-apply but a professional route is probably more reliable and longer-lasting (and will reach the parts we can’t!). Some companies offer a one hour treatment with a luxurious body polish exfoliation followed by a hand-applied tanning solution which is good if you want to relax and can spare the time. Check out Visage The Salon on www.visage.com.sg for this treatment plus others. The alternative is to get a spray tan which may take only 20 minutes from start to finish, including drying time, and costs around $55. Speak to Moira Coops of Sun FX pro on Tel: 9789 5262/6763 9853 for further information and who specialises in “seamless tanning”, the method of matching untanned skin with tanned by blending shades of tanning solution to give an all-over seamless colour. Whichever method you choose there are some very simple guidelines that apply to both:
- Exfoliate on the day of your tanning session by using a non-oil based product (ignore this if it is part of the tanning package).
- Do not wear deodorant, body lotion and perfume.
- Wear loose fitting, dark clothes. The product doesn’t stain but the bronzing powder may rub off (it should be washable so be sure to check).
- Allow 10-12 hours after the tan is applied before showering etc.
- Use moisturiser daily to maintain the tan.
- Do not spray perfume or mosquito repellant directly onto the skin as the alcohol may fade the tan. Instead spray on hair and clothing, or spray a “cloud” just above you to walk through.
Snow News is Good News...
Some of us may be escaping Singapore during the coming months to venture into colder climates for a skiing holiday. With luck, you will have most of your ski wear already and will not have the need to replace a ski jacket or a pair of pants but for those who do I have been taking a swift look around to see what options there are - few unfortunately! If it is a case of updating threadbare thermal vests and long johns, Marks & Spencer is the answer because the quality is good and the fabric soft which is important when wearing for long hours at a time. Cotton turtle necks can be sourced from GAP and these make an essential addition to thermals when the temperature is sub-zero. With regards to the outer layer of jackets and pants you may prefer to do some on line shopping. Otherwise take a look at Snow City which stocks clothing for adults and children plus skis, boots, snowboards etc. Snow City is located at 21 Jurong Town Hall Road, 609433 or check out the website www.snowcity.com.sg. Two other alternatives are Winter Time and Coldwear both of which can be found at Centrepoint, Orchard Road, and Suntec City plus other locations but the selection and stock may be limited. Take a look at their websites www.wintertime.com.sg and www.coldwear.com.sg.
Which ever shopping route you decide to take, be organised and do it early in the season. Bon Voyage!
