LONG-HAUL SURVIVAL KIT

Over the next three months, many ex-pats will be taking long-haul flights back to their country of origin, on average enduring 11 to 13 hours of in-flight entertainment, food and discomfort - if not fortunate enough to be travelling Business Class! Staying fresh is a challenge and I’ve devised contents for an on-board toiletry bag that will ensure you arrive looking rested and glowing. The following also concurs with the rigorous 100ml security stipulation.
- Cleansing facial wipes – to save on weight, transfer a few into a plastic Ziploc bag which will keep them moist for the duration of the flight. Remove any make-up if intending to sleep and use again after waking before re-applying cosmetics. MAC has some excellent facial wipes that are non-drying and gentle on the skin.
- Moisturise well. Decant your favourite moisturiser into a small pot (MAC again do a great selection of travel sized pots and bottles) and apply regularly to your skin. Do the same with your eye cream too and take a lip balm.
- A great find for stubborn eye make-up is Model Co’s Eye Make-up Removing Cotton Buds. Lotion is locked in at one end of the bud that is released only whenthe bud is broken. Good anytime and anywhere!
- Take a facial spray. The very original spray by Evian is still on our shelves and is made in a handy 50ml size, either individually or in a pack of 3, sold in Guardian outlets. Look at alternatives offered by MAC, Chanel and Laneige. All are great to use at any time throughout the flight but particularly after cleansing to tone the skin and prepare it for moisturiser. A quick spray over newly applied make-up too will help seal it and provide a dewy look.
- To ease stress and tiredness, buy Origins Sensory Therapy Peace of Mind. A tiny bottle that you can always keep in your bag that dispenses a small amount of lotion on to your fingertips to firstly smell and then rub gently onto the back of your neck, temples, earlobes and wrists. It will cool you down and release an aroma that’s both calming yet reviving to help ease any feelings of oppression and fatigue.
- Finally, some make-up. Take a foundation or tinted moisturiser in a small pot or bottle, or a stick foundation. A pressed powder, blusher, mascara, lipstick and/or gloss, and an eye shadow if you have the room. All can be applied whilst in your seat.
I think we’re all familiar with the usual tips of drinking plenty of water, exercising in and out of your seat, and snacking on fruit and nuts to keep energy levels up, but these really do help. Easy clothing such as a pair of yoga pants, trainers, T-shirt and a soft sweater or jacket for warmth will ensure your comfort and importantly keep you looking in vogue. A great shop to explore for a huge variety of travel products large or small is The Planet Traveller in The Paragon, Orchard Road so take a look.
Bon voyage!

THE LOW-DOWN ON BROWS
Ask any make-up artist and they cannot stress enough the importance of eyebrows. They add strength to a woman’s face and give it a more polished look. They also draw attention to and bring power to the eyes. But before anything else it is vital to get the right shape for you. To the right is a diagram which illustrates where your eyebrows should start and end and where the arch should be. As in illustration 1, take a long, thin make-up brush and place it against your nostril vertically up to the inside corner of your eye and eyebrow above: this is where your eyebrow should start. Then look straight ahead and at the outside of your pupil to find where the arch of the eyebrow should be, as in illustration 2. Finally, again place the brush against your nostril and move it diagonally to the outside corner of your eye and eyebrow as in illustration 3 to find where it ends. If your eyebrows require plucking and you feel confident to do this yourself, invest in a good pair of tweezers, some now have an in-built light which can be helpful, and use a magnifying mirror. If you find this process painful, you can de-sensitise the area with an ice-cube. The trick is to not over pluck; no one wants thick, bushy eyebrows butthin, spidery ones are just as undesirable. Of course, you may prefer to seek the expertise of a therapist and there are plenty in Singapore but seek recommendations from friends and always make it clear to the therapist the shape and thickness you desire. Many of the cosmetic houses offer this service, MAC and Bobbi Brown being two.
To emphasise your newly shaped brows, a special brow powder in a shade similar to or just lighter than your brow colouring is best and apply with a brow brush. Do not overload the brush with powder and tap the brush on the back of your hand to get rid of excess before using. Start in the middle near the arch and use short, soft, feathery strokes out to the end of the brow. Sometimes, it is not necessary to apply to the start of the brow so experiment to achieve the look you prefer.Bobbi Brown has two excellent brow brushes, one for thin brows and another for thick, and a variety of brow powders. To set the brows in place, an excellent product to use is Bobbi Brown’s Natural Brow Shaper.
If your eyebrows are sparse, you can use a slightly different technique to the one above. Take a soft brow pencil to fill in sparse areas or holes in the brow and draw short, hairlike lines. Use a brow brush to soften. If you want more emphasis, layer powder shadow on top with a brow brush. Should the result look too intense, tone it down by pressing face powder onto the brows with a powder puff. Again, set the brows in place with the Natural Brow Shaper, as above.
I know that many of you are tempted by the brow techniques of embroidery, tattooing or henna. Before opting for any of these, first carefully research the process and result as some can be painful and give a rather false appearance. Remember, the eyebrows you’re blessed with are often the best shape for your face but they may just need some enhancement.
