Fashion Trends for Autumn/Winter 09

This season, there’s something for everyone!  So many trends it’s difficult to choose and you could end up with a totally hotchpotch wardrobe if you’re not careful.  Research well before shopping so that you clearly know the look you’re aiming for and don’t be misled en route.  Baubles, sequins and pearls, velvets, satins and sheer, all these represent Boudoir Dressing.   The look is provocative and luscious, probably best for the evening, but be careful not to overdo it – there should be no suggestion of the Madam!  Skin is directly on show or covered with sheer paneling, and laced corsettes come in sumptuous jewel coloured velvets encrusted with gemstones and sequins.  The short bolero jacket has made a returnMacintosh HD:Users:LAF:Desktop:60T07VPLE_thumb.jpgand and can replace the corsette if you want a subtlerlook, and it will look fabulous draped over a black dress or chemise top and pants.  There are some great designer versions around but many of the high street shops are stocking them too – look out for Kate Moss’s version in Topshop.   The Disco Diva is back in town wearing bright mini dresses and angular shoulders; colour plays a big part with neons, hot pinks and vivid blues being emphasised with sequins and metallics.  Stretchy materials sculpt body shape, which some may find too unforgiving, and shoulders top the frame, be they wide and square or softened with slashed and diagonal necklines.   For elegant appeal, opt for the Forties Era.  Fitted, well-tailored suits and dresses encompass curvaceous figures with peplums hovering over waists, hips and pencil skirts.  Victoria Beckham has captured this look in her recent collection, which is surprisingly tasteful and very popular with many female celebrities (see Elle McPherson right).  This is a look that can be accessorised easily with small, structured bags and stiletto heels.  Leather and Studs are huge this season, appearing in all types of apparel but the biker jacket is top of the list, which can be worn casually over jeans and trousers or over a disco or boudoir dress to give a more edgy style.  In addition to clothing, studs are all over accessories too, from bags, footwear and jewellery.  Plaids haven’t gone away this season but go carefully here and never wear from head to toe.  A statement piece such as a plaid cape or waistcoat can jauntily set off your latest designer jeans or slim plants or for a quieter look choose a hobo shoulder bag.  If plaids are too much, you’ll be pleased to know that the Hounds tooth check is in vogue together with TweedsGirly blouses are gracing the shop rails adorned with frills at both cuffs and neck but these are difficult for those of us with larger busts – inadvertently, we may end up looking like the local bar maid or mutton dressed as lamb!  Finally the big colour is Teal.  A fabulous green-blue hue, so elegant as a one-piece dress or enriched when teamed with blue, smoky taupe or mushroom.  This shade is worn just as easily in the day or night and look out for it in delightful, luxurious lingerie.   As I said at the beginning, there are many looks so happy choosing!

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow?

Macintosh HD:Users:LAF:Desktop:images-21.jpegI have a confession – I neglect my hair.  On the plus side I have it cut every 4-6 weeks (good) but I know I neglect the condition of my hair which is particularly stressed due to regular swimming and sun exposure (bad).  Having explored various paths of information I now have some details to share with you.

  • The process of hair washing is very important.  The first thing to do is to comb or brush out any tangles from the hair.  However, avoid over-brushing your hair on a regular basis – gone are the days of 100 strokes before bed.
  • Use warm water throughout the washing process to open the cuticles of the hair and wash away all the dirt and oil.  Your last rinse can be cold water because this will close the cuticles and add shine to your hair.
  • Shampoo twice, making sure your entire scalp and every hair is covered but use as little shampoo as possible to achieve a good lather.  Try to avoid mixing up your hair too much as this will create tangles and damage to the hair.  The purpose of the first shampoo is to cleanse and the second shampoo is to treat the hair.
  • Ensure you rinse the shampoo out properly.
  • To get the excess water off your hair, just squeeze the water out, never pull or tug the hair because it is at its most delicate when wet.
  • Apply conditioner to the ends of your hair, particularly avoid the scalp if you have greasy hair, leave for a minute and then rinse thoroughly.
  • If you need to improve the condition of your hair use a specific treatment twice a week, apply after shampooing, pile your hair inside a shower cap and leave on for 10-15 minutes.  Rinse thoroughly.
  • If in the sun a lot, buy a leave in conditioner; this will help static.  There are many sun specific treatments now with SPF so search around for one to suit you.  If you exercise in the sun, then wear a hat for protection.
  • When blow-drying do not have the air too hot because this will “burn” the hair.
  • Hot curling tongs and straighteners should be avoided every day.
  • If a regular swimmer, like me, consider using a product specifically to protect your hair from chlorine such as Swim Cap by Philip Kingsley.

OCTOBER – THINK PINK!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and it’s supported worldwide.  Here in Singapore we can do much to fund-raise and encourage everyone, male and female alike,  to be aware of breast cancer.  Early detection is enormously helpful, so ensure all the females you know have regular examinations and that they eat a healthy, varied diet of fruit, vegetables, lean protein and fibre-rich wholegrains, and that they de-stress and relax for preventative reasons.  Another way to take charge of your health is to exercise 3 to 5 times a week.   The Breast Cancer Foundation (“BCF”) here in Singapore is holding “Spin For Life” on 31 October at 9am in Singapura Plaza..  This will be like any other spin class but on a much grander, longer scale and its aim is to  fund-raise for the charity (you can cycle for as long or as short as you wish).  If you’re interested in participating please look at www.bcf.org.sg for further details.

Another fund-raising opportunity is being provided by the Estee Lauder Companies whose brands’ complimentary services are being offered until the end of October.  Go to any Estee Lauder, Clinique, Bobbi Brown or Origins counter for a free 2 minute Pink Service and donate any amount you like.  All proceeds will go towards BCF in Singapore.  Also, look out for the Pink Ribbon Pins on sale at most retail outlets.

Of course, you could always host a coffee morning to raise awareness and support.   Last year I attended an informal gathering at a friend’s home where we were provided with delicious pink cupcakes and aromatic coffee and tea and in return we were each asked to make a donation to BCF and come dressed in something pink.  So go on, invite a group of friends and colleagues over for a Pink Coffee Morning, have some fun and calories and raise a few dollars for BCF, www.bcf.org.sg.
