Spring / Summer 2008 Fashion Update

What a great Style Affairs Event we had in March. We explored the must haves in our wardrobes from the Spring / Summer 2008 fashions in stores right now. Some of the fashions covered were "Safari" and "Global" "Tie Dye" and "Lingerie as Outer Wear" Read on to learn how you can update your wardrobe. Learn what will be a fad and how to have fun without being a fashion victim.

We also looked at the colour trends and what accessories to invest in as this is one way to keep your look current without breaking the bank. Below we have captured the best of the Spring / Summer fashions to help you when you are out and about shopping up a storm.

THE TRENDS

Stars, Stripes and Spots

Whether its celestial stars, nautical stripes or sexy spots, you will find these patterns in all the high street stores.

If you are a more classic dresser, invest in the Nautical look by buying tops with stripes. If you have a sexy personality, spots will suit you to a tee. And although the new "Star" craze seems to be more of a fad fashion, have a little fun as Stars will brighten up any mood.

Incorporate stars in your look through accessories such as belts, necklaces and earrings.

Find these fun pieces in Dorothy Perkins | Top Shop | Far East Plaza | Cactus and Pine | Forever 21

Going Global

Get in touch with your wild side. Look for pieces that remind you of Africa, India, Morocco or Greece. Tribal prints, grecian draping and ethnic influences will have you Going Global in no time.

Find great Global accessories in The Island Shop | Accessorize | Top Shop

Sassy Safari

We love this look; great for Singapore as safari style and the tropical climate go hand in hand.

If you are going to invest in one look this season, Safari should be top priority. Invest in classic pieces and you will have these items in your wardrobe for many years.

Find Safari inspired clothing at Zara | Promod | Massimo Dutti

Fun With Floral's

For something with a Feminine touch, be sure to invest in a couple of floral pieces this season. You will see floral in accessories such as shoes, brooches and on handbags. Team your floral look with the latest gladiator sandals for an up -to- date look.

Find your floral pieces in Guess | Marcciano | Top Shop | Miss Selfridge

Volume Volume Volume

Pants, skirts and dresses have loads of volume this season. Be sure to keep the top half of the body streamlined if your are doing volume on the bottom. This will not suit every figure type so be very careful here.

Get your Boy Trousers in Dorothy Perkins | Top Shop | Warehouse

For a skirt or dress with this seasons volume visit Ted Baker | Karen Millen

Accessory Know How

If you want to update your look without spending a lot of cash or power walking around the shops, the latest accessories are the way to go. If you want to invest in a couple of key pieces, this is what we suggest:

Star Jewelry | Cuffs and Bangles in wood and metal (mix both of these for an up to date look) | Leather and wood shoes | Brown leather bag to accent your Safari look

Other hot items this season; Skinny Belts | Clutch Bags | Gladiator sandals

All of the below will be a great investment as they will go with everything and you will use them forever.

CONTOURING

Contouring can be tricky but with the right tools and practice, you can contour like a pro.

Most women use contouring to make their face look slimmer and more oval, as oval is known to be the most desired face shape.

Before you get started, apply your foundation that is true to your skin tone all over the face. Then visualize an oval around your face. The width of the oval being your eye socket. As for the height and length, this will be the tip of your forehead to the tip of your chin.

Inside the oval will be where you highlight the highpoints. Example; Forehead, under the eyes, top of the cheekbones, tip of chin.

Anything outside of the oval will be where you use the darker powder to contour. Example; Temples, along the hairline, and the sides of your cheeks.

What You Will Need:

  • A good set of Makeup brushes
  • Bronzing powder or powder one or two shades darker than your skin tone
  • Face powder one shade lighter than your skin tone
  • Foundation that matches your skin tone perfectly

Contouring common problem areas:

To contour the Forehead: If your Forehead is wide, apply your bronzer or darker powder to each temple and blend. Creating a shadow effect causing the head to look more rounded.

To contour the Chin: If you have a small, thin chin, apply highlighter to the center of the chin, directly under the center of the lip.

If you have a double chin, apply bronzer  along the jaw line and blend it down, towards your neck. This creates depth and helps to strengthen the jaw line.

When applying contouring color on your neck be sure to go as far as your shirt line to avoid a "mask" look.

To contour your Lips: If you have full lips and you want them to appear thinner, apply a deep shade of lip color to the entire lip. If you have thin lips and you want them to appear plump, apply a light lip color with shimmer or gloss. Then apply highlighter between the peaks of the upper lip and below the center of the lower lip. Your thin lips will look full and gives a pouty appearance.

To contour your Nose: To make your nose appear slimmer, you need to apply the highlighter down the center of your nose. Then apply the contouring shade on each side of your nose, blending carefully.

To contour your Cheekbones: To enhance the cheekbones, suck in your cheeks, apply a darker shade to the hollows and a highlighter to the top of the cheekbones. Then apply blush as normal. Don't over due it!

Suggestions for the different face shapes to help them appear more Oval

If Your face shape is:

Round:

Contour the temples , cheeks and jawline using the tools above.

Square:

Contour your hairline at the two corners by the temple, also the jaw at the two corners using the tools above.

A tip for a square face, apply blush on the apples of your cheeks. This will help draw attention away from the corners of the square. It will also help in widening the area to make it appear more oval.

Heart:

With a Heart face shape you want to diminish the width of your temples and cheeks. Do this by applying the contouring colour to the temple and cheek blending well.

Pear:

Contour the cheeks and jawline. This will minimize the width, giving the illusion of an oval shape.

Rectangle:

A longer face shape will benefit from using blush on the apples of the cheeks. This will widen the face. You can also brush a bit of the contouring shade across the chin to help appear shorter.

Helpful Tips:

**A contouring colour should always be a shade of brown. Never use plum or pink. To get your contouring shade right, use a shade that you would go when you tan.

**Never use powder for contouring that has a shimmer or glitter in it.

**Pressed powder always works the best for contouring. This is because it is low in pigment and blends easy.

**If you are unsure of your face shape, a consultation with a makeup artist will confirm your face shape.
