The Vintage Advantage - 5 Tips To Getting It Right

Wearing vintage can be fun and individual, but it can also go horribly wrong if you wear it from head to toe. Let this not be a deterrent to you. Vintage fashion has many benefits; It's feminine, it's elegant, It's unique and it can be so easy.

If vintage clothing does not appeal to you, try it in your Make-Up. Maybe you have a special event coming up and you want to be super glamorous. We have covered this below in our Beauty Section.

For those who want to give vintage a go, here's 5 tips getting it right every time.

1) MIX IT UP

Mixing different decades or mixing vintage with modern will keep your look interesting and unique. Dressing from head to toe in one decade can look dated. After all no one that I know wants to look 10 years older so proceed with caution. Try teaming a sixties shift dress with modern pumps, or a seventies caftan with jeans. A favorite look of mine is a simple dress complete with 40's beads hanging around the neck, finished with a pair of round toe pumps.

2) TAILOR TO YOUR OWN NEEDS

As we all have different body types and style personalities, take this into consideration when choosing your Vintage pieces. Even the most perfect of bodies can look dowdy when a garment does not fit correctly.

Find a good tailor and explain how you want the garment to look; take it in or out to suit your shape. Take extra care when choosing vintage style clothes; you will find a lot of draping in these antique pieces which is great for hiding any problem areas when draped in the correct place, for example a Tulip dress or skirt in a Vintage print will benefit an hour glass or straight body type.

Vintage does not have to mean dated. A vintage print dress can look great with a modern belt.

A word of caution; watch shoulder pads as you will look like a throw back to the eighties or worse still an American baseball player if they are very pronounced; rip them out or replace them with a more discreet pad.

3) DRESS FOR THE OCCASION

Although we all love to be feminine, sometimes wearing a full volume skirt or frilly blouse is not appropriate. The key to being stylish is knowing how to dress for the occasion and not to get carried away.

For a work appropriate style, team a high waisted pencil skirt or boy trousers with a 50's button down blouse. A shirt dress with a small polka dot pattern teamed with peep toe heels will also look city chic.

Having lunch with the girls.....we love a little volume on the bottom in a skirt or dress teamed with round toe ballet flats. Or if you love your jeans, wear them with a v-neck button down cardi accessorized with that vintage brooch you picked up at Far East Plaza and round toe heels.

4) EVENING AGENDA'S

This is the time to get a little more daring and play up your vintage know how. For a cocktail reception what could be more appropriate than a strapless 50's dress teamed with rhinestone earrings and sparkly clutch bag. (For those who don't do strapless, a crochet bolero over the top will cover any issues).

For something a little more extravagant, materials such as velvet, lace or satin will suffice in a long flowy gown or body hugging dress with rouged details or draping.

If this all feels too much, finish your modern gown with a vintage velvet clutch bags or crystal brooch.

5) ACCESSORY KNOW HOW

A simple and inexpensive way to add a bit of Vintage Style to your wardrobe. With so many great accessory shops in Singapore you have a wide range of choices.

A simple black dress can be transformed when paired with a pearl necklace or drop earring.

Look out for some unique vintage brooches; pin on a plain cardigan to look super chic.

Beaded necklaces, bangles, crystal earrings and bags from a different era are all affordable and stylish ways to add to your vintage wardrobe.

Be sure to choose pieces that you love and you will be guaranteed to look confidant and stylish. Always keep in  mind your personality and body type. And if it's not you , just don't do it!!

Glamorous Vintage Make-Up For Beginners

Also known as Pin-Up Girl Makeup and adopted by today's Hollywood Elite as a tribute to the Screen Sirens of past; this look is undoubtedly the most glamorous and can be easily achieved.

STEP 1) Start with a clean fresh face and apply a natural coverage of liquid foundation. You want to keep the face as fresh as possible. Finish this off by brushing on a pressed powder.

Step 2) Accentuate the eyebrows with a brow powder carefully matching the colour to your brows. Comb through with a brow brush.

Step 3) You want to keep the eyelid's very neutral, apply a cream sheer powder or a light highlighting powder over the entire lid. Accentuate the lid by applying a liquid liner in black above the lashes. Be sure to start thin and get thicker towards the outer edge.

Step 4) Apply your mascara, allow to dry, brush through and apply another coat.

Great Finds in Singapore

Swirl

A store full of great Vintage finds, this sweet boutique was created by two girls who are forever inspired by timeless and vintage designs. They knew if they loved it, others would as well so Swirl was created. They source fabric from Singapore and overseas and seek out vintage fabrics to create exclusive pieces that are feminine and flirty.

They also offer custom fitting services, being aware that all bodies are different.

Last time I visited, there was lovely polka dot button down blouses, strapless and halter neck 50's dresses, flowy fabric cocktail dresses and 60's inspired jackets (with 3/4 sleeves.)

Swirl keeps the quantity of designs down so you only find a couple of each piece, keeping the clothes as individual as you are.

We also love their accessories, vintage inspired jewelry, bags, brooches and if you explore the store you will find lot's of little treasures.

AICI Conference Tampa Florida

Being away for one week to attend the AICI Conference in Tampa Florida was fun, educational and very demanding. Every day was full of informative sessions that started from 8.30am and went through till 6pm. We picked up many useful tips and ideas to bring a more holistic approach to our business of style. It also reminded us that the most important element of Nutri-Style is you, our customer (not that we ever forgot that :-)

We connected back with our goals and future plans to get bigger and better while being reminded that we are on the right path.

Meeting with other Image Consultants from around the world was a real eye opener. This mixed with gala dinners, entertainment, and a Nordstrom fashion show made it was well worth the 25 hours of travel.

Although we didn't get out much, The Renaissance Hotel was (with pure delight) connected to The International Plaza. So we did get to shop up a storm .(Only for the benefit of this article of course!!)

The materials are high quality and you can pick up contemporary jewelry, shoes and even control wear to complete your look. A few doors down, be sure to visit CACHE LUX, same brand but higher end and double the price but even more stunning.

FOREVER XX1: Now I know we have a store in Singapore, but the Forever 21 in The International Plaza is huge. This is a great store for picking up basics and key trend pieces that are extremely affordable. We are always advising our clients that at the beginning of each season, to buy a couple of fashionable designs that don't cost the earth and mix with your existing wardrobe to keep you looking fresh and young. Forever 21 is a great place to do this.
